Dr. Khalil has contributed to research in the general field of Biotechnology and Microbiology. This includes contributions to basic research in diverse areas of this field such as biotechnology of thermophiles and its applications, bioremediation of oil-contaminated sites, bioactive agents from medicinal plants and Nano biotechnology applications (developing new Nano materials and testing them for various biological applications). In these areas, he contributed to the investigation and exploring the biodiversity of thermophiles in Saudi Arabia. In addition, he has contributed to the investigation of microbial dynamics in oil field system and the bioremediation of oil-contaminated sites. Furthermore, he has contributed to the developing new Nano material (Carbon nanotubes CNT) and investigate their effect of microorganisms (bacteria).
One of the major achievements of my work on CNT is the development of modified CNT with other organic molecule and the testing of these molecules on killing bacteria in contaminated water Lately, Dr. Khalil focused on isolation and characterization of thermophilic bacteria from hot springs in Saudi Arabia and deep red sea. Recently we are able to identify two novel thermophilic strains (deposited in DSMZ and BCCM/LMG bacteria collection).
